Frank Hyder: An Amazon Tale: 211 Fishkill Avenue, Beacon, NY

BEACON, NY – Ethan Cohen Gallery at the KuBe Art Center is pleased to present Frank Hyder: An Amazon Tale. 

Painted after living and engaging with art in Venezuela between 1990 and 2000, Frank Hyder’s, An Amazon Tale displays seven acrylic paintings carved into wood depicting Amazonian portraits and landscapes. Painting from observation, memory, and spontaneity, Hyder draws each picture in wood then begins simultaneously painting and carving and adding and subtracting color until satisfied.  Each painting comments on the duality of man and nature both working together and against one another.

Each piece depicts landscapes and portraits in tandem which allude a metaphysical return to simplicity. Where one carving depicts, a detailed portrait encompassed by Amazonian plant life, another is adorned with a carving of a female body surrounding a smaller body in its center. Each painting works to create a bridge between a world of modernity and a world of simplicity through color and shape. Hyder gives a sense of freshness with wood carved paintings that explore what is essential in art.

About Frank Hyder:

Frank Hyder studied painting under notable artists including Elaine de Kooning, Fairfield Porter, Alice Neel, and Alex Katz. Hyder has participated in more than 200 group shows and over 100 solo exhibitions throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. Hyder’s work has been the subject of solo museum exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, Caracas, Museo Jacobo Borges, Museum of Modern Art Zulia, Museo Universidad de Los Andes and Museum of Modern Art Coro, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, The Carnegie Museum, La Salle Museum of Art, The National Museum of Catholic Art and History, and The Noyes Museum.
