Under the planned economy system of the People's Republic of China, women were regarded as a crucial labor force and actively engaged in production. To alleviate the childcare burden on women, a large number of nurseries with custodial functions emerged. These institutions were characterized by collectivism and de-familialization, reflecting the broader societal emphasis on collective welfare over individual family units. This childcare model persisted until the 1980s, after which it gradually shifted back toward a more family-oriented approach.
The image originates from a photograph taken in China in the 1950s, depicting two kindergarten teachers with their children boating on a lake while singing.
